An Evening in Saint James: How to Do Our Town Right

Saint James does not announce itself. Tucked between Smithtown and Stony Brook on Long Island’s North Shore, it is the kind of hamlet people drive through on Route 25A without realizing they just passed one of the most quietly charming corners of Suffolk County. We are biased, of course. We chose to build Enology here for a reason.
If you are visiting, or if you have lived nearby for years and never given the town a proper evening, here is how to do Saint James right.
Start with the History
Saint James wears its history lightly. The St. James General Store has been operating since 1857 and stands among the oldest continuously running general stores in the country, still stocked with penny candy and the kind of charm that cannot be manufactured. Deepwells Farm, a stately nineteenth-century property, anchors the other end of the town’s historic character with its grounds and seasonal happenings.
Give the late afternoon to a slow look around. The town rewards the unhurried.
Then Come Hungry
By early evening, point yourself toward 412 North Country Road. Enology sits in the heart of town, and the early hours are one of the best-kept secrets on the North Shore: Tuesday through Thursday, Happy Hour runs from 5 to 7 p.m. with reduced pricing on select plates, pours, and cocktails, at the bar seats only.
Settle in for the full evening: small plates from a kitchen that sources from local farms and local waters, a cellar list spanning six continents, and a team that treats every question about wine as the start of a good conversation. Some nights bring live music. Others bring wine classes. The room takes care of the rest.
Why Locals Keep It Close
Ask around Smithtown, Stony Brook, Nissequogue, or Head of the Harbor and you will find that Saint James inspires a particular loyalty. It has a strong sense of community, neighbors who genuinely care about the neighborhood, and an appreciation for the finer things done without fuss. That spirit is exactly what we built Enology to serve.
Make a Night of It
The perfect Saint James evening is not complicated: a little history, a slow walk, and a long dinner. Check what’s on at Enology, reserve your table, and see the town the way it deserves to be seen. Slowly, and with a glass in hand.
From the Page to the Glass
Reading about it is one thing. Reserve a table and taste it for yourself.
