What Actually Happens at a Wine Tasting Class

Guests seated for a wine tasting class at Enology Wine Bar & Bistro

The phrase “wine tasting class” scares off exactly the people who would enjoy it most. It sounds like homework. It sounds like someone might quiz you on malolactic fermentation. It sounds, above all, like a room where everyone else knows more than you.

Here is what it actually is at Enology: one of the best nights out on Long Island, disguised as education.

The Format

Each class is built around six themed wines, poured and guided by our team. The theme gives the evening its spine. Some nights it is a journey, like sparkling wines from around the world. Other nights it is a deep look at a single grape across regions, tasting how the same varietal speaks differently in Australia, France, Italy, Greece, and South Africa.

You taste in sequence, you compare, and somewhere around the third pour the room gets noticeably chattier. That is by design.

No Pretension, No Pop Quiz

Education is a core part of what Enology exists to do, but our classes are structured evenings, not lectures. Nobody is graded. Every question is welcome, including the ones that start with “this might be a dumb question.” It never is. The whole point is to expand your palate and give you language for what you already taste.

The guests who get the most out of a class are usually the ones who arrived claiming they know nothing about wine. Knowing nothing means everything is a discovery.

Why It Beats Another Dinner Out

A tasting class gives the evening a shape that a standard dinner reservation cannot. There is a shared experience at the center of the table, a natural conversation starter in every glass, and a souvenir you take home in your own palate. Guests come solo, in pairs, and in small groups celebrating something. All of it works.

It also changes how you drink afterward. Once you have tasted six wines side by side with someone guiding your attention, every future wine list gets easier and more interesting.

Reserve Your Seat

Classes are intimate by design and seats are limited. See what is coming up on our wine tasting classes page, or browse all events at Enology in Saint James. Your palate has more range than you think. Come find out.
