A Saturday Afternoon with Germany and Austria
1 to 2:30 p.m. Germany and Austria, and not just Riesling. Six high quality wines, and the reasons each one made the cut. $69 per guest, or $89 with a cheese plate. Registration opens soon.
Say German wine and most people say Riesling. It is a fair answer and an incomplete one. Germany and Austria between them grow some of the most precise, food-loving, quietly thrilling wine in Europe, and a good deal of it has nothing to do with Riesling at all.
On Saturday, November 21, we pour six of them, and we tell you exactly why each one earned its place. Grüner Veltliner and its peppery snap. Weissburgunder and Silvaner, which behave nothing like the whites most tables reach for. Spätburgunder, which is Pinot Noir speaking German and doing it beautifully. Blaufränkisch, which tastes like it was grown for the dinner table because it was.
The through line is a cool climate and steep ground: high acid, low weight, and a clarity that makes every other wine on your list taste a little louder afterward. These are the bottles that change what somebody orders for the next year.
Ninety minutes, six wines, one guide, and no wrong questions. $69 per guest for the class and the wine, or $89 with an individual cheese plate. Seats are limited and this one tends to move quickly. Registration opens soon.
